The sheer joy of watching your dog run along a sandy beach and play in the surf is next to heaven and the beaches of the Outer Banks provide a wonderland for you and your best friend. The beauty of the Outer Banks is a matter of pride for those who live here and a reason for guests to return year after year.

Always be courteous and clean up after your pet. Collection and prompt disposal of your pets waste is expected.  And don't forget to bring lots of water!

The list below will help with you find the perfect ocean side playground for your dog, but please check with the jurisdiction(s) in which you’d like to bring your pet for any updates or changes to their policies. 

Duck

  • Throughout Town: Dogs are required to have a current rabies vaccination, collar with proper ID, and controlled by a leash not to exceed 10' throughout town including at the park, boardwalk, and Duck Trail.

  • Town Park: Same rules as stated above.

  • On the Beach: Dogs are allowed on Duck beaches year-round, and may play unleashed as long as they are under the watchful eye and control of a guardian. Keep in mind that there are no public beach accesses in Duck. Also, be aware that a dog's paws can be easily burned by hot sand during the summer.

Kitty Hawk

  • Friday before Memorial Day until the day after Labor Day:

    • 10am to 6pm, dogs must be on a leash not exceeding 6'.

  • At all other times, leash may be extended but must be retractable to 12'.

  • If owner remains within 30' of their dog then the dog may go unleashed, as long as it is not disturbing other beach patrons. The owner should be in control of their dog and carry their leash at all times.

  • Violation of any of these rules shall be a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $50.00.

Southern Shores

  • May 15th until September 15th: dogs are allowed on the beach before 9am and after 6pm.

  • Leash laws are all year round, leashes must be no longer than 10ft.

Kill Devil Hills

  • Dogs are allowed on the beach before 9am and after 6pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day (aid dogs are exempt).

  • When permitted, dogs must be on leash not to exceed 10' and under control.

Nags Head

  • Year-round permission for dogs on the beach as long as they are on a leash no longer than 10'.

  • A collar or harness with current rabies tag and ID tag is required to be worn at all times, unless the dog is enclosed on the owner's property.

Corolla

  • Year round permission for dogs on the beach.

  • Dogs must remain on leash but no length requirement in place.
